Adapted Vehicles

mobility ideas
Despite their disability, many disabled people are still thankfully able to drive a car. Depending on the nature of their disability some may have to switch from a manual to an automatic. But the ability to keep on driving is no doubt something that no disabled person ever takes for granted.

In some cases however a standard car is not suitable for them. This can be the case for some wheelchair users, for example. In these cases adapted vehicles can be the answer.

One classic example of this type of vehicle is one that has a wheelchair ramp at the back. The wheelchair can be manoeuvred up into the van and secured into place during the journey. You will have the two front seats in place as usual, but depending on the size of the van there may also be an additional single rear seat next to the space for the wheelchair.

Adapted vehicles come in all shapes and sizes. Some of them will be big enough to accommodate a scooter as well, which is useful if you use one of these as opposed to a wheelchair.

There are a range of other alternative features as well, which you won’t find on every vehicle of this type. A typical example would be a front seat that swivels to allow much easier access for a disabled person to get into the driving seat. Some vehicles also come with winches to help make access much easier.

As you can see, it pays to think about which adapted vehicles are likely to be of the most use to you. Make sure you try them out before buying one too. This is because you will need to know that the particular wheelchair you are using will work with that car or van. Make sure you are comfortable with it and that it really will be of use to you.

These vehicles range considerably in price, but it is possible to buy one second hand to keep the cost down. Approach the purchase just as you would approach any new car, and make sure you get the best deal you can.
