Day Care Centres

Being able to live in your own home is something that most people don’t even think about. It is simply something that is taken for granted.

But if you have a disability of some kind, either physical or mental in nature, you might find it more difficult to maintain a normal life. Luckily there are facilities and services that can help you remain more independent, as well as enabling you to socialise more than you might be able to otherwise.

Day care centres form an essential part of this. As the name suggests, they don’t provide a permanent home. Instead they provide a place to go for the day to meet other people and give you a change of scene. As such they can also provide a period of respite for anyone who regularly cares for you. You might be dropped off at the centre – or even picked up from home – and then your carer can go out and have a break too.

As such, these centres can be an invaluable addition to many peoples’ lives. Many people are surprised to learn that it isn’t just a case of ‘tea and biscuits’ either. Plenty of different activities go on at day care centres, and they can be a real lifeline to many people.

A centre like this is also going to be local to you – that is part of the advantage of going to one. No matter where you live, you will have at least one centre nearby that you can visit. Quite often people go to day care centres once a week, so they can have it to look forward to each time.

The best way to find out where your local centres are is to contact your local council. They are responsible for the majority of services, and they will also be able to tell you whether you will need to pay for the service, and if so how much. This will vary from person to person though, which is why you won’t generally find any sums or figures available to view online.

In the end though, these facilities can be a lifeline for both those who use them and those who get a break from their caring role as a result.
