Disability Employment Guidelines
mobility ideasFrom the point of view of an employer, there are guidelines and rules which should always be followed when considering employing someone who has a disability of some kind. It is illegal to turn down a disabled person for a job unless there is a specific and acceptable reason why this should be the case.
However there are many disability employment guidelines that are designed to help the employer and the employee when it comes to considering disabilities. Employers do vary in their openness towards disabled people; some are exceptionally good at making adjustments to welcome disabled people into their businesses, while others are not as good.
These disability employment guidelines are in place to help disabled employees settle into a job which may require alterations to be made. For example, an employer may have set rules in place for employees that might have to be changed to accommodate a disabled worker. A different desk that is designed to easily and comfortably accommodate a person in a wheelchair is just one of many examples.
Of course the thing to remember is that no two disabled people will have exactly the same needs or requirements when it comes to a workplace. Ideally both parties should work together within the disability employment guidelines to be able to get to the right outcome together. No employer can turn down a disabled person on the basis of their disability alone, although certain jobs have been deemed to be too dangerous or inappropriate for certain people with specific disabilities.
For the most part though, the guidelines are there to protect both the employer and the employee. They are also there to make sure that people with disabilities of all kinds can make a good contribution to society in many different ways, and that is what matters the most.
