Home Adaptations

Depending on what kind of disability you have, you may find it difficult to manage in your normal home. But that doesn’t mean you will want to move out or go anywhere else – after all, this is your home and you should be able to use it just as you always have.

Home adaptations are what make the difference in many peoples’ lives. Some can be simple while others are extremely complex – it all depends on the needs of the person who requires them.

For example, if you live in a house and you gradually find you start having trouble getting up the stairs, your problems could easily be solved by having a stair lift installed. What used to be a troublesome journey is made much easier by this piece of equipment, and modern designs mean they look good and take up minimum space as well.

Other popular adaptations include the installation of ramps outside your home. Trying to get a wheelchair up even a single step is extremely difficult with help, and impossible without it. And yet a ramp can completely change all that and make a wheelchair bound person independent again.

But access isn’t just an issue outside the home. Not all wheelchairs can go through all doorways, for example. And even if you can get about okay on your own, you may find that getting in and out of a normal bath or shower is problematic. In these situations home adaptations can involve removing a standard bath and installing one that is designed specifically for a disabled person to easily use on their own.

It is possible to get financial help from your local council for these kinds of adaptations too. The type and extent of the help you will get varies in each case, but it can be significant.

In some cases a stair rail could be all that is needed to make all the difference a person needs in their home.
Home adaptations can also mean major differences, but they all mean that someone can carry on living in the place they love.
