Motability Cars
mobility ideasIf you are you’re not alone. There are thousands of disabled people who have trouble getting around because they find it hard to use public transport. Affording to buy a car is tricky in normal circumstances, but it can often be even more difficult for a disabled person. This is particularly true if their disability means they cannot work.
Luckily there is a solution that can help. Motability cars are available to you if you get the Disability Living Allowance each week. You just need to be sure that you are in receipt of what is known as the HRMC – the Higher Rate Mobility Component. This is what makes you eligible to apply for a car under the rules of the scheme.
Motability cars are basically ordinary cars that you can lease out. You cannot simply go out and select whichever car you wish; the Motability website has a PDF file of the different cars that are included under the scheme. But you will find that a lot of the cars are very practical and nice to drive.
There are two door ones for people who don’t have families, and larger cars for those who need the extra room. And if you are in a wheelchair they also have a number of wheelchair accessible vehicles – more commonly referred to under the program as WAVs – which you can lease instead.
The key is to choose from the wide range of motability cars that are available. Making the right choice for you can be difficult, and it pays to think about how often you use it and what you will be using it for.
You also need to think about how much you want to spend. At the lower end of the scale you may not even need to pay anything before you get the car. Larger and more expensive cars mean that you do. But check the details of each one and consider your needs and your budget before you make your final decision. This car could make a big difference to your life – so make sure you choose the right one that benefits your needs.
