Retirement Benefits
mobility ideasBut if we are to enjoy our retirement years more fully, we should always make provisions for various retirement benefits. The main one is to have a pension of some kind. At present there is a state pension which you can claim, although you will only receive the full pension if you have paid in the required amount of National Insurance contributions during the years you were at work. You can also pay into your own private pension if you wish – some people have both.
But there is a range of other retirement benefits that you should be aware of too. You may not be able to receive all of them, but the more knowledge you amass the less likely it is that you will miss out as a result.
For example, once you get over sixty years of age you can claim a free bus pass. You may not use it all the time but it is useful to have and it can save you a lot of money if you use public transport a lot instead of driving your own car.
The most important thing to do is to check with the company you are working for at present, if you are approaching the age of retirement. Different companies have different rules in place and some give better benefits than others, so it pays to know where you stand overall.
As you might be aware, the government can provide a number of retirement benefits that a significant proportion of people can claim if need be. For example there is a Winter Fuel Payment that is paid if the weather is particularly cold. This is useful for paying your increased heating bills at this time of year.
In short, do your research and make sure you are getting all the benefits you can. There is no point in missing out at all!
